This Week's Featured Article: A Magento Love and Lost Story
By Brent W Peterson
Around 2017, Brent Peterson's agency Wagento was hired to build approximately 1,200 e-commerce stores on Magento for Universal Music Group (UMG), covering their global roster of artist properties. After an initial failed proof of concept for an American Idol star—where the deployment pipeline was too slow for the music industry's pace—they succeeded with a Republic Records store and won the full contract.
The architecture gave each store its own Magento instance, connected by Magento Order Management as a single source of truth, all running on AWS with Rackspace support. Each country required unique configurations for payments, taxes, shipping, languages, and digital rights. The team pre-built all integrations so new stores could launch in under a day via Composer.
At peak, the system handled ~586k CDN requests per minute and powered a single weekend where one artist generated ~$4 million in merchandise sales. By 2019, Wagento had launched over 200 stores in one year, winning an award for the most stores launched.
However, UMG already owned Fame House, a Shopify-based agency. When Magento Order Management—the system's spine—was sunset, the rationale for the complex architecture collapsed. Stores gradually migrated to Shopify, ending a technically impressive but unsustainable build.

B2B Medical Aesthetics Desperately Needs a Digital Makeover | Keri Concannon & Olivia Schmid | Beauty Rep Is Fixing the Broken B2B Experience in Medical Aesthetics The B2B buying process in medical aesthetics is stuck in the past. Sales reps spend only 35% of their time selling. Practices juggle 14 or more brands with no centralized way to access products, education, or marketing assets. CEO Keri Concannon and COO Olivia Schmid shared how their platform Beauty Rep is changing that. Built from firsthand experience on both the sales and brand side, Beauty Rep gives practitioners a single destination to discover brands, access approved content, and place orders without waiting on a rep to respond. AI is reshaping the industry through their trademarked AesthetiTech initiative, bringing conversational shopping and personalized recommendations to a space that has operated on spreadsheets and email chains for far too long. |
